General points
General principle of CPD
- In
formulation the credit scheme the Royal College has taken into account the different learning objectives and different leaning styles of individuals. It is recognised that physicians learn through their normal daily work but there is a need to have access to educational activities outside their employing organisation. This is to enable physicians to ensure that knowledge and performance standards are sustained at a national threshold and developed in the line with best practice. It is recognised that some physicians have both clinical and professional roles, such as teaching, research and management whilst others may have no significant clinical activity.
The scheme, therefore, aims to encourage physicians, as a part of a planned program for CPD, to undertake a mixture of kinds of educational activity, both within and outside their employing
organisation, and covering both their clinical and professional roles.
Who are expected to join the CPD program?
- All post training Physicians
- All non training grade doctors
What are recognised educational activities?
What is the minimum credit requirement? (1 credit = 1 hour)
- 50 clinical education credits per year (250 credits over 5 years)
- 25 professional education credits over 5 years
- Physicians are encouraged to aim beyond the minimum requirement
- In any one
year period, a minimum of 25 credits must be external credits and the total personal credits should not exceed 10 credits in any one year, unless the total annual credit exceeds 55 (50 clinical and 5 professional)
What is the CPD requirement for part-timers?
- Physicians working part-time with the same range of responsibilities as a full-timer are expected to meet the minimum credit requirement as above
What happens if I am sick, on maternity leave or go abroad for a long period?
- Those who are on long-term sick, maternity leave or temporary employment abroad are not
expected to meet their annual requirement but should fulfill their minimum 5 year requirement. It is advised that learning objectives are agreed before the planned absence or immediately upon return to work after long-term illness.

also a requirement for an evaluation of each activity, which includes both a general rating of the quality of the activity and a reflection on its specific value in meeting the planned objectives
- These can be recorded on line or on paper
- Credits are automatically awarded once the evaluation has been filed
- The diary contents are subjected to audit and monitoring by the CPD office at the RCP
